| "Because it takes a village to raise a child..." |
Dear Friends, The Tacoma School District currently serves approximately
30,000 children. These children, OUR children, come from wonderfully diverse communities, bringing a wealth of opportunity
and promise to the future of our beloved city. According to the Office of Superintendant of Public Instruction (OSPI,
2009), many of our children are unprepared to leave our schools to pursue their goals of furthering their education, entering
a trade school, or contributing to the work force. Here are a few facts (OSPI, 2009): - On-Time Graduation Rate - 68.4%
- Drop-Out Rate - 8.1%
- Tenth Graders Meeting Math WASL Requirements - 32.2%
- Tenth Graders Meeting Science WASL Requirements - 26.8%
Given the scores, it is obvious that we are not only failing to provide our children with the quality education needed
to graduate on-time, we are also failing to prepare them to compete and thrive on local, national, and global landscapes.
But TOGETHER we can change this trend...

"It Takes a Village
to Raise a Child..." In
order to get our schools back on track, we must address the following issues:
- Collective Effort
- No one person, candidate, teacher, administrator, or other community member can single-handedly correct the issues within
our schools. We need to work collectively with a variety of community members, including teachers, administrators, parents,
students, counselors, community members, and officials. Just as the problems are complex, we will need the collaboration
and cooperation of the community to move forwards.
- Communication - The best intentions and plans, if poorly
communicated, can result in disaster and waste. We need to open up the lines of communication by making meetings accessible
(to include times and locations), publicize and document meetings. Communication requires feedback and dialog with constituents
- and we need to ensure that this dialog process is uninterrupted as we work together to improve our schools.
- Assessment - Based upon the information provided by OSPI
and a number of other sources, our schools are not providing the quality education to our students. We need to assess
shortfalls and carefully determine areas of improvement. Too, we need to determine best practices, and encourage innovation
as we move forwards. Assessment also applies to resources and the potential for sharing resources among the schools.
- Accountability -
As our schools are facing serious budgetary challenges, we must ensure accountability on all parts. In the midst of
a recession, we must ensure that we use every tax-payer dollar with complete accountability.
Together, we can transform our school system - but this will require collective effort! Let's work together!
